Highway Rescues
© Ruth Marlene Friesen
Dad was worried when I was planning to go to the city by myself the other night. We've had some
bitterly cold temperatures this January. I assured him that God has always protected me in the past,
and that if my purposes were pure and noble, I could go out unafraid. If anything did go wrong, God
would send help at just the right time.
I had a newsletter to deliver to the printers, and a Board meeting with Western Tract Mission that
went until 10 pm. I stayed after another hour to work on the computer that's newly online, to make
it functional for the staff.
On the highway, a little distance past the Warman Road intersection, something went POOF under the
hood and clouds of steam rose up! Plus a great odor of antifreeze. I pulled over right away.
It was 11:30 by now, and I was really praying that I wouldn't have to sit out there in the cold too
long!
Within 30 seconds I saw tail-lights backing up towards me through the misty clouds. Turned out to be
Don Heppner from Osler, a brother to Ron Heppner from our church, and we used to go to the same
Sunday School when we were all kids 50 years ago!
Don generously offered to drive me all the way home, but stopped at his place in Osler to tell his
wife about the delay. We had great conversation going to Hague! He told me he had prayed that
morning that he be able to help somebody that day!
About 1:20 a.m., the RCMP (police) called from Warman to ask if they could tow the car into
Warman.
The next morning, our retired minister, Rev. John Janzen took Dad there to get the hose replaced
that had a three inch tear, and the antifreeze refilled. Dad was back by noon with the car.
My own heart is quite full of gratitude to God for that wonderful and speedy assistance!
I wouldn't be surprised if you too, can tell stories of how God has answered prayer in many highway
emergencies.
Briefly, here's a few that come to my mind. Maybe they'll prime your memory.
- My very first car was an old Strato Chief with spells of hiccuping and stalling when I slowed
down. One day a mechanic at the Lone Star Texaco removed the airline filter showing how it was
plugged. He suggested I drive all the way into the city without it, and buy one there, since he
didn't have a new one. Cost me about $5. Priceless lesson.
- My Nova was my first and only first owner car. Once paid for I went to Ontario with it. There on
the freeways it began to sneeze and sputter. I had Aunt Jean with me who worries a lot. I pulled off
to a service station with only a young teen boy attendant. I told him I wanted an airline filter
like "this" (thankful for the previous experience) - and we installed it together. I had eight years
of adventures with that car.
- My Brougham Ambassador was my bus for picking up girls for club. One week in Toronto it was
stalling over and over, and one day it was rather close to a residential lawn. A woman came out
waving a knife. I cried out aloud to God and instantly there was a man calling from a tow truck,
"Lady, you need help?" he hitched up my car and away we roared.
It turned out that car had a crack in the engine and was guzzling oil. I got rid of it and resolved
to get out of debt and never borrow for anything again! One of the best decisions I ever made.
- God provided a small red Acadian when I moved home to care for my parents. (Mom persuaded Dad to
spend his inheritance from his mother for it) It was trouble free all the years I had it. But there
was the night I foolishly decided to go a mile south of town to get around a long train. I ended up
in deep snow drifts a mile from town, and did a lot of soul-searching and praying until 2:30 am when
God sent angels, named Cooper and Fudge, to rescue me!
- Then I drove Dad's Caravelle for a while, and and now his Bonneville - which is sighing for
retirement I think. It has given us a number of such adventures in the last couple of years.
We could swap stories like this for hours, couldn't we? :)
If you collect quotes, take this one from me;
"We are only safe as we trust in God to take care of us, whether we are out in bad weather, or in
a house with unhealthy cross-purposes, or if our own spirits are in torment. If we are in the center
of His will, the worst stable, manger, gutter, or prison cell becomes sanctified ground. By your
choice to trust in God, you can create a nest of peace in the center of a storm."
